Japan has emerged as a country with one of the top-quality education systems in the world (ranked 10th among countries with the best education systems in 2018, according to QS Top Universities). It is also a nation with many attractive policies aimed at drawing students from around the world to study, work, and conduct research. However, there are various ways to study abroad in Japan, and the path one chooses depends on individual circumstances. In this article, we will introduce the most common forms of studying in Japan.
Studying in Japan with a Government Scholarship
This type of study program in Japan is intended for students with strong academic abilities and good moral character. The Japanese government offers six types of scholarships, one of which is the "Research Students" scholarship, designed for those who plan to pursue a master's or doctoral degree. Research students receive a monthly stipend of 143,000 yen, though the amount may change depending on the year.
Obtaining this scholarship is not easy. Therefore, not all students meet the requirements or have the ability to study in Japan through this route.
Students studying in Japan under a government scholarship are exempt from tuition fees. The duration of the scholarship is reviewed based on the student’s academic progress, with some cases receiving funding for up to four years, covering the entire duration of a master’s or doctoral program.
Studying in Japan through Student Exchange Programs
This form of studying abroad involves sending and receiving students between universities that have signed cooperative education agreements. In many cases, academic credits are transferable between the two universities during the exchange period.
If you choose this option, it is important to thoroughly research the student exchange programs available between your university in Vietnam and the universities in Japan.
Short-Term Study Abroad in Japan
This program allows students to learn the language and experience the culture of another country while still enrolled at a university in Vietnam.
It is not designed to grant degrees or certificates but is intended for working professionals or university students in Vietnam who want to make the most of their long-term vacation. Through this experience, students can develop discipline, problem-solving skills, and the ability to handle pressure while also exploring Japan’s unique cultural heritage.
Self-Funded Study Abroad in Japan
This is the most common option chosen by international students due to its various advantages. In this program, students must pass the selection process conducted by Japanese educational institutions. There are two main ways to pursue this form of study:
Applying independently: Students handle all procedures and paperwork themselves.
Applying through an agency: Students use study abroad agencies that partner with Japanese institutions to assist with application and visa procedures.
Applying Independently Without an Agency
This is a cost-effective option; however, since it is self-funded, students must carefully prepare all necessary documents, including visa applications and university admission papers. Keeping up-to-date with regulations, procedures, and requirements is crucial to avoid errors. Many risks are involved, such as visa rejection or denial of residence status (COE). Therefore, seeking advice from those who have successfully applied before can improve the chances of success.
Applying Through a Study Abroad Agency
To reduce the risk of visa rejection, students can seek assistance from study abroad consulting agencies in Japan. The cost of using these agencies typically ranges from $800 to $1,500.
Currently, there are many such agencies in Vietnam, but not all of them are reputable or offer reasonable prices. Therefore, students should carefully research the agency's history, advertisements, and feedback from previous students before choosing one. Additionally, reviewing contract details is crucial to avoid financial losses due to untrustworthy agencies.
